Access to affordable and healthy food is critical in helping families achieve good physical and mental health. Access depends on many factors, such as income, mobility, available transport, location of grocery stores and facilities within the home for food preparation and storage.

Difficulty accessing safe and healthy food regularly is known as ‘food insecurity. Food Bank’s 2021 report suggests that up to 28% of Australian adults can be categorised as being food insecure. It’s also estimated that 1.2 million children live in households experiencing food insecurity.

Food insecurity is an ongoing and critical issue in Australia, particularly considering increased cost of living pressures, climate change and COVID-19’s continued social and economic challenges.
